Register your evidence of odour
It is important that you continue to record incidents of unwanted odour.
Complete diary sheets
Diary sheets go beyond a simple report of odour and provide important evidence to illustrate whether unwanted odour has resolved or continues to impact residents.
You should record the date and time you noticed the smell, how strong it was, where you could smell the odour on your property and the impact it had on you.
Diary sheets should be completed every day for at least seven consecutive days (ideally 14) and submitted to the council regularly.
Agree to an officer verification visit
Our ability to action a case of statutory nuisance on behalf of residents is significantly increased if our environmental protection officers can witness the odour themselves and record it. Therefore, it’s highly encouraged that residents agree to allow an officer verification visit.
We will contact you to arrange a time for a visit to take place. These visits can be undertaken outside of normal working hours if this is when the smell is most noticeable.
Officers will use a hydrogen sulphide monitor during their visit to monitor odour levels. They will also establish if they can smell the odour and make a judgement as to its intensity and impact.
Officers will be sensitive to your privacy during their visit and will try to minimise any disturbance to you.
