The Big Food Truck has launched in Fleetwood thanks to £12,000 of funding from Wyre Council's Crisis and Resilience Fund, helping ensure local residents can access affordable food while reducing waste.
Each year, an estimated £14 billion worth of food is wasted across the UK, while many families continue to struggle with rising food costs. The Big Food Truck addresses both challenges by collecting surplus food from supermarkets and manufacturers that would otherwise go to waste and redistributing it to local communities through a flexible membership scheme.
Offering everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to everyday cupboard essentials, the service provides a cost-effective way for households to stretch their budgets. Members receive food worth at least four times the cost of their membership, with prices starting from just £5 for a single-person membership.
By rescuing surplus food and making it available at affordable prices, The Big Food Truck helps residents save money, reduce food waste and build greater financial resilience.
Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council, said:
"Communities across Wyre continue to feel the impact of the rising cost of living. While crisis support remains essential, initiatives such as The Big Food Truck provide a sustainable, long-term solution that helps residents regain independence, improve financial resilience and access affordable food."
The service is operated by The Big Food Project, a charity that began as a small initiative at Blackpool Food Bank in 2012. Today, the organisation works with more than 120 local partners to tackle food insecurity across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
The Department for Work and Pensions provides Crisis Resilience Fund (CRF) funding as part of a multi-year grant to local authorities in England. The fund launched on 1 April 2026, replacing previous short-term local welfare schemes, to help families in immediate financial crisis and build long-term resilience.
Wyre residents can access The Big Food Truck every Friday from 1.30pm to 2.30pm at St Nicholas Church, Highbury Avenue, Fleetwood, FY7 7DJ.
