Wyre Council is delighted to announce the opening of Adventure Play at Thornton Health and Fitness Centre, providing an exciting new indoor destination for children and families across Wyre.
Following an investment of over £430,000 by Parkwood Leisure and Creating Active Futures, the new facility has been designed to provide a fun, safe and inclusive environment where children can climb, slide, bounce and explore while developing confidence, creativity and social skills through active play.
The Adventure Play Centre features a range of exciting attractions tailored to different age groups, ensuring children of all ages can enjoy an engaging and age-appropriate play experience.
The Baby and Toddler Area (ages 0-4) offers a safe and welcoming environment where younger children can enjoy soft play equipment, explore a colourful ball pit and take their first adventures in a space designed especially for them.
For older children, the Junior Area (ages 5-12) provides an action-packed experience featuring a large multi-level climbing structure, interactive ball play features, levitation tables and a giant multi-lane wavy slide where friends can race each other to the bottom. Children can also take on Ninja Tag, a thrilling real-life arena that tests speed, strategy and agility through exciting interactive challenges. Designed for adventurers aged 5-12, it brings a whole new dimension to indoor play.
The facility also includes a dedicated Sensory Experience Room, creating a calming yet stimulating space with illuminated colour-changing bubble tubes, reflective mirrors and engaging sensory features designed to spark curiosity and support sensory development.
The Adventure Play Centre includes:
- Ball pits
- Slides
- Rope bridges
- Sensory area with mirrors and lights
- Lookout points

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Leisure, Health & Community Engagement Portfolio Holder at Wyre Council, said,
“We are delighted that Adventure Play at Thornton Health and Fitness Centre is now open, providing families with a fantastic new attraction that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
This impressive new facility offers an exciting and engaging environment where children can play, explore and develop new skills, while giving families another great reason to visit Thornton Health and Fitness Centre.
We look forward to welcoming families from across Wyre and beyond to experience everything Adventure Play has to offer.”
Adventure Play will also host dedicated play sessions and children's birthday parties, making it an ideal venue for celebrations, family days out and regular play visits. The on-site FBK Café provides a welcoming space for parents and carers to relax and enjoy a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals while children play, helping to create an enjoyable experience for the whole family.
The new facility further strengthens the range of family-friendly activities available at Thornton Health and Fitness Centre and supports Wyre Council's ambition to provide high-quality leisure experiences for residents and visitors alike. This development also enables our Wyre Moving More work to encourage children and young people to play and enjoy being active.
