More to be proud of in Wyre: £1 million boost for community spaces

Community organisations across Wyre could soon benefit from a £1 million funding programme designed to transform local spaces and create lasting impact for residents, following approval by Wyre Council’s Cabinet.

The second round of the Community Infrastructure Grant Programme has been approved, with funding set to support improvement projects for community centres, sports hubs, village halls and heritage buildings across the borough. The decision is now subject to the council’s call-in period.

The fund, opening for applications this summer, will support not-for-profit organisations to deliver improvement projects to community centres, sports hubs, village halls and heritage buildings, helping them become more accessible, sustainable and better equipped to serve local people.

The new funding follows a highly successful first round, which supported projects in Thornton, Garstang and Poulton-le-Fylde, delivering tangible improvements that residents are already benefiting from.

At Christ Church Thornton Community Centre, investment in upgraded facilities has enabled the launch of a new Family Friday Walking Breakfast Club, bringing families together and helping children start their day with a healthy meal.

The project has increased use of the centre by 68 additional people each week and contributed to over 23,000 visits annually, while also supporting volunteering opportunities and strengthening community connections.

The wider impact goes far beyond the building itself. The new provision has improved children’s school attendance, encouraged healthier lifestyles through walking to school, and created a welcoming place where families can connect, build relationships and feel part of their community.

Reverend Damian Platt, Coordinator of the Christ Church Thornton Community Centre Family Breakfast Prosperity Scheme, said:

“This funding has been transformational for our community. What was delivered is far more than improvements to a building, it has created a space where families can come together, children can start the day well, and people feel supported and connected.

We’ve seen real changes, from children arriving at school on time to families building friendships and confidence. It shows just how powerful investment in community spaces can be.”

Across the borough, funded projects have:

  • Increased access to safe, modern community facilities
  • Supported local events and activities
  • Reduced carbon emissions through building improvements
  • Created more inclusive and welcoming spaces for residents of all ages
  • The second round of funding will continue this approach, focusing on projects that:
  • Extend the life and value of community assets
  • Increase their use and benefit to residents
  • Deliver health, wellbeing and environmental improvements
  • Strengthen local pride and community connections

Grants will be available from £20,000 upwards, with applications opening at the end of June and closing in September 2026.

Councillor Lesley McKay, Resources Portfolio Holder, said:

“This programme is a great example of how targeted investment can deliver real, visible change in our communities. The first round showed just how much impact these projects can have — from improving facilities to bringing people together and supporting healthier, stronger neighbourhoods.

We’re proud to be able to commit £1 million to a second round, giving even more organisations the opportunity to improve the places that matter most to local people.”

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement, said:

“What makes this programme special is the difference it makes to everyday lives. These projects aren’t just about buildings, they’re about people, wellbeing and creating opportunities for communities to thrive.

We’ve already seen how investment can help families connect, support young people, and create welcoming, inclusive spaces. We’re excited to see what the next round will deliver for Wyre.”

The fund will be open for eligible organisations including charities, community groups, parish and town councils, and sports clubs operating within Wyre.
