Wyre Council and YMCA Fylde Coast Launch Free Leisure Access for Young Athletes Through New Performance Pass

Wyre Council, in collaboration with YMCA Fylde Coast, is proud to launch an exciting new initiative aimed at empowering the borough’s most talented young athletes.

As part of the Wyre Moving More strategy, the newly launched Performance Pass will provide selected individuals with 12 months of free access to Wyre’s leisure facilities, helping them to train, grow and thrive in their sporting careers.

The Performance Pass is designed to remove financial barriers that may prevent young athletes from accessing the facilities they need to reach their full potential. The pass grants free entry to all Leisure Centres and facilities in Wyre, including access to gyms, swimming pools and a wide range of exercise classes. This initiative reflects Wyre Council’s commitment to promoting health, wellbeing, and excellence in sport across the borough.

In addition to receiving free access to facilities, successful applicants will be named Wyre Moving More Ambassadors. In this role, they will represent the borough and the Wyre Moving More strategy, serving as role models for their peers and promoting the benefits of physical activity through their achievements at local, regional, and national levels.

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council said:

“We are committed to supporting and inspiring the young people of Wyre and helping them thrive. The Performance Pass is a fantastic example of how we are putting the Wyre Moving More strategy into action, by removing barriers and creating real opportunities for our young athletes to succeed. It’s about more than just sport, it’s about building a healthier, more active Wyre.

“This initiative not only gives our talented athletes the tools they need to succeed but also inspires others to get active and embrace a healthier lifestyle. It’s about creating a culture of movement and motivation, where every young person feels supported in their journey.”

The initiative is open to young athletes who demonstrate a high level of commitment and potential in their chosen sport. Applications will be reviewed by an independent panel of experts, with priority given to those who face financial challenges that limit their access to training resources.

The Performance Pass is part of a broader effort by Wyre Council to encourage lifelong participation in physical activity and to support the next generation of sporting talent. The Wyre Moving More strategy aims to make physical activity a normal part of everyday life, improving health outcomes and building stronger, more active communities.
