Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain on the job experience whilst working towards a recognised qualification. What attracted you in applying for the role of Corporate Apprentice?

Harry:

 I applied for the corporate apprentice role because following my gap year I was unsure of what I should do. I dismissed university as I was unsure what degree to pursue which made me feel like it was a large financial commitment for an uncertainty. When I looked at apprenticeships, one stood out. Wyre Council have given me to opportunity to explore a plethora of departments over the three year course so I can test drive lots of career options and find where I best fit.

Daine:

Great Salary, no student debt, future prospects/job security

Sol: 

One of the main reasons it caught my attention was the ability to move around departments within the council. This interested me because it is a unique opportunity to learn about and experience a lot of job roles, which was perfect for someone in my position who wasn’t completely sure what they wanted to do in the future. Another attraction of this role was the ability to work and study a CMDA. I immediately recognised this as a valuable opportunity to gain education, qualification and work experience at the same time.

Tell us a little bit about your experience since you’ve joined Wyre?

Amy: 

So far my time at Wyre has been very varied, I have worked in different departments that have shown me the contrast of services the council offers to the public. My time in the contact centre showed me the type of enquiries and daily calls we receive, whilst I was at marine hall I was able to experience the different shows and weddings our venues hold and finally my current placement in finance has given me an insight to how the department operates to keep the business going.

Harry:

I’ve had nothing but positive experiences in all aspects, everyone here is lovely and the managers show they care about your development. In my three months I’ve had chance to hold meetings with other departments regarding the updating of an internal process and attended both planning committee and the full council. I’ve been out on site with planning officers and enforcement officers. I’ve processed applications and produced delegated reports for discharge of conditions applications. In economic development I have made and held contact with the public all things business awards related and had chance to make a PowerPoint for the upcoming learning lunch in planning. This list could extend for a very long time, I feel I have achieved lots in my short time at Wyre so far and look forward to achieving much more.

How have you been supported during your time at Wyre?

Daine:

All of my managers in my job roles and changeovers have been very helpful and patient. They have allowed me to feel as part of the team and gauge a real understanding of the day to day ongoing within each sector which makes deciding whether you would work in there full time much easier to grasp. I also have 2 mentors who help with my movements around the council to the other roles. These are also very supportive when giving advice, whether it is work related or regarding my CMDA Business Management course.

Ethan:

My team has been very supportive. They are always happy to help with answering my questions and showing me how to do certain things. They are always looking to get me involved in projects which is a great way to learn and practice skills.

What do you think your next steps will be after finishing your apprenticeship?

Ethan: 

To utilise the skills I have learnt in the workplace along with the skills I have learnt whilst doing the chartered management degree apprenticeship.

Amy:

At the moment I’m not sure what department I would like to peruse my career in, but I’m looking forward to see what opportunities my apprenticeship has to offer in the future.

Daine: 

Full time employment within the council, using my knowledge and experience that I have attained within my 4 years of the apprenticeship.

Sol:

I believe my next steps after finishing this course will be working full-time in a role that I have grown fond of during my time in a specific department, hopefully remaining with Wyre.

If you knew someone that was thinking about applying to be an apprentice at Wyre, what would you tell them?

Daine:

Yeah, definitely go for it! It is one of the most underrated local degree apprenticeship schemes going, I cannot believe more people don’t know about it!

Amy:

Wyre are very helpful and supportive, they will make sure you have everything you need to help you throughout your apprenticeship and your time at Wyre. I would encourage anyone who was thinking about it to apply as it’s a great way to learn and develop vital experience.

Sol:

I would tell them what a unique and excellent opportunity it is to be able to develop professionally, gain such a variety of experience in different departments, and be surrounded with a good group of people in a good working environment. I would communicate the value of being able to come out of the course with a high level qualification as well as 3 years of full-time employment achieved.

Harry:

I would tell them that it’s a great idea as it is a great opportunity to learn practical skills and gain a business management degree whilst earning a competitive salary and avoiding any student loan debt.

Ethan:

I would tell them that you will learn lots of different skills from being in the workplace, also you will gain confidence from communicating with the public and helping with services that the council offers. You will gain a chartered management degree apprenticeship qualification as well which is fully funded along with a competitive wage.
