Food hygiene inspections
Food hygiene inspections
The food team carries out food hygiene inspections of food businesses in the district including small retail outlets, caterers, butchers, sandwich bars, dairies, and large manufacturing premises. The team follows government codes of practice for our inspection service and issuing of food hygiene ratings.
Officers have the right to enter and inspect premises at all reasonable hours, except domestic premises where notice will be given. How often routine inspections happen depends on the potential risk posed by the type of business and its previous record. Sometimes inspections are carried out following the receipt of consumer and hygiene complaints. Revisits may be necessary to check the completion of works and give advice.
Food hygiene rating scheme
The food hygiene rating scheme is a good advertisement for businesses that comply with food hygiene law - good food hygiene rating is good for business. It's already a legal requirement for businesses to meet hygiene regulations. Having the six different ratings gives businesses room to improve.
Safeguards for food businesses
For an explanation of the food business safeguards please refer to the business safeguard guidelines.
Request for a re-inspection
As the food business operator of the establishment you have a right to request a re-inspection for the purposes of re-rating if you have taken action to rectify the non-compliances identified at the time of inspection.
You are able to make unlimited rescoring revisit requests between inspections.
To make a request for a re-inspection please complete the form below:
You must provide details of the improvements made with your request, including supporting evidence where appropriate and pay the fee of £178. If we believe you have provided sufficient evidence of the required improvements, we will send you a letter to confirm acceptace and then make an unannounced visit within three months.
The local authority officer will give you a ‘new’ food hygiene rating based on the level of compliance that is found at the time of the re-visit - you should be aware that your rating could go up, down or remain the same.
Please note: you may make a request for re-inspection form from your inspecting officer by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by phoning 01253 891000. A form will be posted out to you. Payment should be made at the Wyre Council offices. For card payments please ring 01253 891000. Completed forms should be sent to The Food Safety Section. Due to increased administration time a request made this way will cost £191.
Right to reply
As the food business operator of the establishment you have a ‘right to reply’ in respect of the food hygiene rating given following your inspection.
The purpose is to enable you to give an explanation of subsequent actions that have been taken to make the required improvements as detailed in the inspection letter, or to explain mitigation for the circumstances at the time of the inspection.
Food hygiene rating appeal
As the food business operator of the establishment you have a right to appeal the food hygiene rating given following your inspection, if you do not agree that the rating reflects the hygiene standards and management controls found at the time of the inspection.
You have 21 days (including weekends and bank holidays) from the date of receipt of the notification to lodge an appeal.
