Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the management of Wyre’s leisure centres changing?
The current contract with YMCA Fylde Coast, which has operated Wyre’s leisure centres since 2006, is coming to an end on 31 March 2026. Wyre Council is required to conduct a formal procurement process to appoint a new operator who can meet the evolving needs of our communities.
Will the leisure centres be closing?
No. All five leisure centres in Garstang, Fleetwood, Poulton, and Thornton will remain open. Wyre Council is committed to maintaining high-quality leisure services and ensuring continuity for all users.
Who will be the new operator?
Following an extensive and competitive procurement process designed to secure the best possible outcome for residents and communities, from 1 April 2026, Creating Active Futures will take over the management of Wyre’s leisure centres.
What will happen to my membership after March 2026?
Your membership will remain valid under the new operator until the end of your current membership agreement. Wyre Council and YMCA will work closely with the incoming provider to ensure a smooth transition, and further details about new memberships under the new operator will be shared in due course.
Will there be any disruption to services?
There may be short-term, temporary works to facilitate essential maintenance or upgrades ahead of the handover. These will be clearly communicated in advance to minimise inconvenience. We expect that there may be teething issues as we support the leisure centre teams through new systems, but support teams will be on hand to assist existing employees through this transition.
Will staff at the leisure centres be affected?
Wyre Council values the dedication of leisure centre staff and is working to ensure a well-managed transition. Staff will be kept informed and supported throughout the process.
Will the new operator offer the same services?
Yes. Wyre Council’s contract requirements include maintaining a wide range of services such as swimming lessons, fitness classes, and inclusive programmes for older adults, young people, and those with disabilities.
Will free swimming continue for under 17 years in Fleetwood?
This successful initiative is funded by Fleetwood Town Council. We fully expect the funding to continue and whilst it does Creating Active Futures will happily continue with the agreement.
How will Wyre Council ensure the quality of services is maintained?
The Council has set clear expectations in the procurement process to ensure that the incoming operator delivers high-quality, inclusive, and value-for-money services. Ongoing monitoring and engagement will be part of the new contract.
How can I stay informed about the changes?
Updates will be shared via Wyre Council’s website and social media channels. A dedicated webpage will be launched to provide timely information about the transition and future plans.
What will happen to membership options and pricing?
We understand that pricing is an important concern for users of the centres. While no final decisions have been made yet, we want to provide assurances that affordability remains a key priority. Any future changes will be carefully considered to balance rising costs with our commitment to keeping leisure services accessible to everyone.
What will happen to my club’s regular block booking at the leisure centres after 1st April?
All current block booking information will be passed on to the new leisure provider as part of the contract handover. The new provider will confirm arrangements for bookings from 1 April 2026.
Who are Creating Active Futures?
Creating Active Futures (CAF) are a Community Benefit Society with their own independent trustees. Parkwood Leisure partners with CAF to align with their community benefit objectives and provides professional support services and expertise.
What will happen to the group exercise classes?
Creating Active Futures are currently working with the instructors to make sure your favourite classes continue to run to the same timetable from 1 April. We’re also looking at opportunities to offer a wider range of classes and sessions in the future.
Will I still be able to book my classes through the website or an app?
Creating Active Futures will be in touch when the contract starts on 1 April with details of how to download the app and continue booking your favourite classes. If you have any problems, a team will be available at all centres to help you through the process and support the onsite teams.
Will my club or myself still be able to continue booking the facilities?
Creating Active Futures is working with the YMCA to contact all current bookers, including sports clubs. They are committed to working closely with these groups to ensure a smooth transition as responsibility moves from the YMCA to Creating Active Futures.
Where any changes or planned investments may affect existing bookings—such as the updates to the group exercise programme at Garstang Leisure Centre—Creating Active Futures will engage directly with clubs and users to keep any disruption to a minimum.
