Wyre Council marks Volunteers’ Week 2026 by celebrating the incredible contribution that volunteers across Wyre make to our communities.

Volunteers’ Week returns this year for the 42nd year. From Monday 1 to Sunday 7 June 2026, Wyre Council will join thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK.

Running every year since 1984, the week provides a crucial opportunity to thank volunteers and recognise the value of their time, passion and skills. The campaign highlights the diversity and unity of volunteer work across the UK.

Wyre Council has over 200 registered volunteers, who in the previous 12 months have volunteered 36,379 hours of their time to undertake a huge range of activities, including leading guided walks, running cycling groups, hosting arts and crafts sessions, taking part in community litter picks, operating beach clean groups across the coastline, befriending lonely and isolated people, stewarding events at the theatre, hosting bike repair workshops, working in Wyre Council’s CCTV control room and much more.

This Volunteers’ Week, Wyre Council will be celebrating the hard work and dedication of its volunteers by welcoming them to the Civic Centre in Poulton for a special afternoon tea event.

Volunteer Co-Ordinator Simon Swindells said:

“This event is an opportunity to show our appreciation for all that our volunteers do. From litter picking and beach cleans to befriending and bike repairs, our volunteers make a real difference to communities across Wyre every day.”

It’s not only Wyre Council’s volunteers who deserve recognition this Volunteers’ Week. Community groups and volunteers across Wyre work tirelessly to support others, strengthen local connections and help their neighbourhoods thrive.

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement, said:

“Volunteers are at the heart of our communities, and this week gives us a valuable opportunity to say thank you. Whether volunteering with the council or as part of a local community group, their commitment, kindness and generosity have a lasting impact across Wyre. We are incredibly grateful for everything they do to support others and make our borough such a great place to live.”

Volunteers’ Week is led by the UK Volunteering Forum, a partnership between Volunteer Scotland, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) and Volunteer Now in Northern Ireland.

The UK Volunteering Forum said:

“Volunteers bring a richness to organisations across the country. There is no better time to recognise the diversity of our volunteers and celebrate the difference that volunteering makes than during Volunteers’ Week. Without volunteers many charities just simply could not function, with so many people giving up their time and going above and beyond. The week is a chance for all of us to show just how vital they are to charities and communities everywhere.”
