Wyre Council has elected Councillor Steve Nicholls as its Mayor for 2026/27 following a meeting of full council on 14 May. Councillor Steve Livesey has been elected as Deputy Mayor.
Councillor Steve Nicholls is serving his second consecutive term as Mayor of the borough, while continuing his dedicated service as Conservative Councillor for Hardhorn with Highcross ward, a role he has held since May 2023.
He was Deputy Mayor for the municipal year 2024-25 and has served as a member of the Licensing Committee. He is an active member of the Poulton Rotary Club and the Friends of Jean Stansfield Park. Over the years he has supported numerous charitable causes, including Fleetwood Youth Hub, The King’s Trust and The Salvation Army home in Fleetwood. He has also shown strong support for the Veterans Garden at Norcross and attended VE Day services and celebrations at Fleetwood Memorial Park.
Looking at the municipal year ahead, Councillor Nicholls is looking forward to his time as Mayor in Wyre. He commented,
“I thoroughly enjoyed my year in office for 2025 and 2026, attending over 150 events across Wyre. It has been a privilege to meet so many residents, groups and organisations. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my Deputy, fellow councillors and officers, and I very much look forward to continuing to serve the people of Wyre in 2026 and 2027.”
Councillor Nicholls has appointed Westview Community Association, a Fleetwood based voluntary organisation dedicated to supporting and improving the lives of people in the Westview area, and The Pantry, a local food bank and community support service helping those in need with food and practical support, as his chosen charities for his second term as Mayor.
During last night’s meeting of Full Council, Councillor Nicholls welcomed his chosen charities from the previous year, The Salvation Army and The Army Benevolent Fund, to receive the funds raised during his term as Mayor.
He also presented the prestigious H.M.S. Sheraton Trophy to 15 year old Kara van der Merwe. Kara is an outstanding young athlete whose success across multiple sports reflects her talent and dedication.
Alongside her sporting achievements, she has shown remarkable resilience and compassion, balancing her success with the responsibilities of being a young carer, making her a truly inspiring and deserving winner, and a rising star who has brought pride to the borough.
During the meeting, the newly elected Mayor appointed Amelia Sherry, 15 from Fleetwood as Youth Mayor for Wyre. The role of Youth Mayor was created jointly by Wyre Council and Lancashire County Council to help identify the needs of local young people and what's important to them.
