Wyre Council supports Food Waste Action Week 2025 ahead of new weekly food waste collections

Wyre Council is thrilled to support Love Food Hate Waste’s Food Waste Action Week, running from 9–15 March 2025.

Delivered by WRAP’s Love Food Hate Waste, this flagship annual campaign brings together national and local governments, community groups, NGOs and global brands to take meaningful action on food waste. The week focuses on simple, practical steps that help food go further—saving money, time and stress while protecting the planet.

Every year, households across the UK throw away 4.4 million tonnes of edible food, generating 16 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. This waste costs families a combined £17 billion per year, the equivalent of £1,000 for a family of four.

Here in Wyre alone, households waste an average of £470 a year on food that ends up in the bin.

At a time of rising costs and environmental pressure, reducing food waste is one of the fastest and simplest ways for households to save money and cut emissions.

This year’s theme: ‘Make your food go fuuuurther’

In 2026, Food Waste Action Week focuses on helping people stretch the value of the food they already have. Each day of the campaign offers quick, practical tips:

Monday: For your money

Tuesday: For your time

Wednesday: For our planet

Thursday: For your health

Friday: For your headspace

Dr Sam Hubble, Specialist for Food System Transformation at WRAP, said:

“Eat what you buy, and love every mouthful. It’s a win-win: it’s saving money, it’s saving resources, and it’s a simple thing that we can all do to save the planet. Food needs to go in bellies, not bins.”

As part of Wyre Council’s wider commitment to reducing waste and supporting residents to live more sustainably, weekly household food waste collections will begin from 13 April. This new service will help divert thousands of tonnes of food waste from landfill and instead turn it into renewable energy.

To support households in cutting waste even further, Wyre Council is offering free premium membership to FiveDinners.com for every household.

Fully funded exclusively for residents of Wyre, Five Dinners can help you to reduce food waste, by providing personalised shopping lists that ensure you only buy exactly what you need. Cllr Simon Bridge, Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces Portfolio Holder, said:

“Launching weekly food waste collections is a major milestone for Wyre. This new service not only cuts the amount of waste going to landfill, but also helps households save money and live more sustainably. By offering free access to practical tools like personalised meal plans through Five Dinners, we’re giving our residents the support they need to reduce waste at home. We’re grateful for the community’s ongoing support as we work together for a cleaner, greener Wyre.”
