Discover Nature at Wyre’s first Winter BioBlitz

Bioblitz at wyre estuary country park nature walk

Join us for an action-packed day of wildlife discovery at Wyre Estuary Country Park on Saturday 20 December from 9AM until 3PM as we present our first Winter BioBlitz.

Co-ordinated by Wyre Council, Biology Northwest, Wyre Rivers Trust, LERN – Lancashire County Council and Morecambe Bay Partnership, this exciting event brings together nature enthusiasts, families and expert ecologists to explore and record the incredible winter species that call the Wyre Estuary home.

A BioBlitz is a fun, hands-on event where wildlife experts and the public work together to find and identify as many plants, animals and fungi as possible in a single day. All data collected will contribute to national databases that monitor biodiversity across the UK.

Event highlights include:

  • Birdwatch walk – 10:00 AM
  • Winter trees and wellbeing walk – 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM
  • Linchen foray – 12:45 PM – 1:30 PM
  • Fungal foray – 12:45 PM – 1:45 PM
  • Saltmarsh survey – 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
  • Themed displays – all day

In addition to this, there is also a Muddy Shores walk on Friday 19 December between 12 noon and 2.30 PM from Knott End Car Park.

Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or simply curious about local wildlife, everyone is welcome! No experience required—just bring your wellies or boots, warm outdoor clothing, smartphone, camera and binoculars if you have them.

There are many reasons for taking part including helping record vital data for wildlife conservation, the opportunity to learn from experts and discover hidden habitats and the chance to enjoy a day outdoors connecting with nature. You can even upload your own wildlife sightings live at the bioblitz.

Councillor Simon Bridge, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces at Wyre Council comments: “We’re thrilled to host the very first Winter BioBlitz at Wyre Estuary Country Park. There are some fantastic activities planned throughout the day, and it’s a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to come along and discover more about the vast and diverse wildlife we have right here on our doorstep in Wyre”.

This event is one of many activities run by Wyre’s Great Outdoors Team. A full programme of events for 2026 will be published soon—keep an eye on our website and sign up for the newsletter to get event information delivered straight to your inbox.
