Wyre Council marked Volunteers’ Week 2025 by welcoming volunteers to an afternoon tea celebration, to thank them for all the work that they do on behalf of the council.
Volunteers’ Week returns for 2025 after reaching its 40th anniversary last year. From 2 to 8 June, Wyre Council has joined thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK.
Running every year since 1984, the week provides a crucial opportunity to thank volunteers and recognise the value of their time, passion and skills. The campaign highlights the diversity and unity of volunteer work across the UK.
Wyre Council has over 200 registered volunteers, who in 2024/25 volunteered over 35,000 hours of their time to undertake a huge range of activities, including leading guided walks, running cycling groups, hosting arts and crafts sessions, taking part in community litter picks, operating beach clean groups across the coastline, stewarding events at the theatre, hosting bike repair workshops, working in Wyre Council’s CCTV control room and more.
Simon Swindells, Volunteer Co-Ordinator at Wyre Council, said:
“Volunteers’ Week is a special time to shine a spotlight on the incredible contributions our volunteers make, but our appreciation extends far beyond just one week. Every day of the year, our volunteers are out in the community making a real difference, whether it’s through environmental projects, community events, or supporting local services. Their dedication, kindness, and commitment are truly inspiring, and we’re so grateful for everything they do to help make Wyre a better place for everyone.”
Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement said:
“Our volunteers are the heart of Wyre. Whether they’re leading nature walks, supporting local events or helping keep our parks and communities vibrant, their dedication makes a real difference every day. This afternoon tea is just a small token of our immense gratitude for the time, energy, and compassion they give so generously. Thank you for being the driving force behind so much of what makes Wyre a wonderful place to live.”
Councillor Jane Preston, Deputy Mayor said:
“This past year has been another incredible one for Wyre Council’s volunteers. While not all of them could join us for the afternoon tea celebration, together they contributed over 35,000 hours of their time in 2024/25—a record-breaking achievement that truly highlights their dedication and impact.”
Volunteers’ Week is led by the UK Volunteering Forum, a partnership between Volunteer Scotland, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) and Volunteer Now in Northern Ireland.
The UK Volunteering Forum said:
“Volunteers bring a richness to organisations across the country. There is no better time to recognise the diversity of our volunteers and celebrate the difference that volunteering makes than during Volunteers’ Week. Without volunteers many charities just simply could not function, with so many people giving up their time and going above and beyond. The week is a chance for all of us to show just how vital they are to charities and communities everywhere.”
