A year of tourism growth for Wyre

Data released by Marketing Lancashire today has shown that 4.4 million people came to Wyre last year providing a significant boost to the borough’s visitor economy.

Lancashire’s annual independent STEAM report analyses data from tourism and hospitality businesses gathered for 2022 and shows continued growth as the county continues to recover from the impact of the Covid pandemic.

The results show that visitor numbers for Wyre rose from 3.06 million to 4.4 million in 2022 an increase of 44% year on year.

In a return to almost pre pandemic visitor levels which stood at 4.82 million in 2018, Wyre has had one of the highest percentage increases in visitor numbers in Lancashire over the last year.

The report also shows that of the 4.4 million visitors, 3.75 million came for a day visit with 0.65 million staying over as part of a holiday, generating 3.26 million nights in accommodation bookings across the district.

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre comments, “These latest figures are really positive. Working together with our brilliant tourism businesses is allowing us to put Wyre firmly on the map. Our coast to countryside offer makes Wyre unique and it’s fantastic to see such a big increase in visitors to our beautiful borough.

“Whilst we recognise that there are continued challenges ahead, as a council we are committed to supporting economic growth and our work with the tourism industry is a key part of this. Wyre has so much to offer from all types of accommodation to family friendly attractions, amazing outdoor spaces, and brilliant events and we look forward to welcoming even more visitors in the years to come.”
