Marianne is our Democratic Services Officer works in the council's Democratic Services department. We caught up with her to see what she loves about working here.
What attracted you to the Democratic Services Officer role?
I was initially attracted to the role as I studied politics at Liverpool University and wasn't aware there were democratic offices in local government. After getting the role, the training and flexitime were big motives to stay.
What have been the highlights of your career with us so far?
I progressed from Assistant Democratic Services Officer within six months of working for Wyre Council and I felt supported, appreciated, and welcome. My main highlight, however, is winning the Association of Democratic Services Officers Rookie of the Year 2021. My team and manager put the effort in outside of work to nominate me and I was the only person nominated out of the North West councils.
What do you like most about working here?
Working for the council is a lot different than I expected. I thought it'd be more rigid, but it is really flexible and relaxed. There is trust with hybrid working and flextime, which gives you a work/life balance you don't get anywhere else. There is also support for staff and policies in place that make it feel like a safe and secure place to work. There is fair pay and an open, honest environment.
Having weekends, bank holidays, and Christmas off is also a bonus.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying for a role with Wyre council?
I would say that there are so many opportunities with Wyre council. If you are good at your job and willing to learn then they will invest in you. The council acknowledges that their staff are their best asset and the people here are the best - from Councillors and Corporate Management Team to colleagues you work with day to day. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly.
