Award categories and entry process

1. New business start up of the year

This award is open to businesses established with less than three years trading at the time of entry.

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate: 

  • A record of growth and profit performance
  • Successful impact in the sector in which the business operates in
  • Evidence of customer satisfaction and high quality service
  • Foundations upon which growth and success can be sustained

2. Micro business of the year

This awards is open to all businesses that employ 0-9 full time employees.

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Positive well planned leadership
  • Outstanding record of growth and profit performance during the past 12 months
  • Successful impact in the sector in which the business operates in
  • Evidence of customer satisfaction and high quality service
  • A plan growth - exploited new markets, income generation opportunities
  • Embedded continuous improvement plans for employees

3. Small business of the year

This award is open to all businesses that employ 1 – 50  full time employees.

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate: 

  • Positive well planned leadership
  • Outstanding record of growth and profit performance during the past 12 months
  • Successful impact in the sector in which the business operates in
  • Evidence of customer satisfaction and high quality service
  • A plan growth - exploited new markets, income generation opportunities
  • Embedded continuous improvement plans for employees

4. Family business of the year

This award is open to businesses are actively owned and/or managed by more than one member of the same family, continuing through generations who have a clear vision for the long term future of the business.

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate:

  • A vision for the next three to five years
  • Succession planning
  • Positive well planned leadership
  • Outstanding record of growth and profit performance during the past 12 months
  • Evidence of customer satisfaction and high quality service
  • Embedded continuous improvement plans for employees

5. Corporate social responsibility award

This award is open to all businesses. 

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Strong internal culture and commitment to social responsibility
  • Making a positive impact within a local community, society and or environment
  • Effective engagement and promotion
  • The benefits both internal and external as a result of delivery

6. Community and charity orgainisation of the year 

This award is open to all voluntary, community and social enterprises.
Judges will be seeking the following to be demonstrated:

  • Positive impact made on society and/or the environment
  • Ways in which intervention has made a positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged or vulnerable individuals
  • Future development for growth and sustainability of the service provision

7. Employer of the year award

This award is open to all businesses.

Judges will be seeking the following to be demonstrated:

  • An open, inclusive work culture
  • Best practice and inspiring leadership and management
  • Staff training, development, retention, and recruitment
  • Innovative working environment and staff facilities
  • Encouraging young people into the business, including running an apprenticeship or training scheme

8. Marketing and digital business of the year

This award is open to all digital and marketing type businesses.

Judges will be seeking businesses to demonstrate:

  • Maintained or increased sales during the previous 12 months
  • Identified new markets, income streams, opportunities
  • Increased value proposition within the market
  • Deliver a high level of service and customer satisfaction
  • Commitment to employees via training and development

9. Outstanding woman in business

This award is open to all women 18+.

Judges will be seeking a women that can demonstrate:

  • Being an inspirational, passionate and dedicated business leader
  • Qualities that make the individual an excellent role model for aspiring managers and entrepreneurs
  • Overcoming challenges
  • Achieving outstanding success

10. Outstanding male in business

This awards is open to all male 18+

Judges will be seeking a male that can demonstrate:

  • Being an inspirational, passionate and dedicated business leader
  • Qualities that make the individual an excellent role model for aspiring managers and entrepreneurs
  • Overcoming challenges
  • Achieving outstanding success

11. Environmentally friendly business of the year

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Ethical leadership and stakeholder engagement
  • Clear environmental management systems and efficiencies
  • Full assessment of the environmental and social impact of the products and resources they use and produce throughout the lifecycle
  • Strong financial and commercial performance
  • Sustainable schemes that have been successfully launched

12. Professional and service business of the year

Judges will be seeking professional businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Maintained or increased sales during the previous 12 months
  • Identified new markets, income streams, opportunities
  • Increased value proposition within the market
  • Deliver a high level of service and customer satisfaction
  • Commitment to employees via training and development

13. Manufacturing and engineering business of the year

Judges will be seeking service businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Maintained or increased sales during the previous 12 months
  • Identified new markets, income streams, opportunities
  • Increased value proposition within the market
  • Deliver a high level of service and customer satisfaction
  • Commitment to employees via training and development

14. Growth and innovation business of the year

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate:

  • 20 per cent growth on the previous financial year
  • Performance measurement processes
  • Understanding of the market in which it operates, customer needs and opportunities for added value service
  • Embedded innovation culture with its employees
  • Continued sustainable growth strategy
  • Commitment to employees via training and development

15. Retailer of the year

Judges will be seeking retail businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Maintained or increased sales during the previous 12 months
  • Identified new markets, income streams, opportunities
  • Increased value proposition within the market
  • Deliver a high level of service and customer satisfaction
  • Commitment to employees via training and development

16. Rural Business of the year

Judges will be seeking rural  businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Maintained or increased sales during the previous 12 months
  • Identified new markets, income streams, opportunities
  • Increased value proposition within the market
  • Deliver a high level of service and customer satisfaction
  • Commitment to employees via training and development

17. Construction business of the year

Judges will be seeking construction businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Maintained or increased sales during the previous 12 months
  • Identified new markets, income streams, opportunities

18. Health business of the year

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Their health and wellbeing support for employees
  • How they encourage employees to get more active
  • How they support employees to monitor progress
  • Benefits it has brought to the organisation and its employees

19. Leisure and tourism business of the year

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Maintained or increased sales during the previous 12 months
  • Identified new markets, geographical areas, income streams, opportunities
  • Increased value proposition within the market
  • Deliver a high level of service and customer satisfaction
  • Commitment to employees via training and development

20. Customer service business of the year 

Judges will be seeking businesses which can demonstrate:

  • Adapting and changing to ensure a positive future
  • How by applying creativity and new thinking to your business has led to great results through a change, alteration, transformation, restructuring, remodelling or revolution in a product or service
  • Benefits to the businesses culture, business and employee growth

21. Wyre business of the year

The beneficiary of this award is selected by a board of judges. The award will be presented on the night to one of the short listed finalists taken from all award categories. This category is not open for entries.

 22. Special recognition for business and service in Wyre

The beneficiary of this award will be selected by the Chief Executive of Wyre Council, Garry Payne. This category is not open for entries.
