Referendum for an elected Mayor

Every district council in England must operate one of three decision making models:

  • an elected mayor and cabinet executive
  • a leader and cabinet executive
  • a committee system

Wyre Council currently operates under the leader and cabinet model.

Wyre Council is required to publish the number of signatures of local electors needed to support a valid petition requiring the council to hold a referendum on whether or not Wyre should change to one of the alternative models - either a directly elected Mayor or a committee system. This takes place in February each year.

This number, known as the 'verification number', must be 5% of the local government electors listed in the published electoral register each year.
