Referendum for an elected Mayor

Every district council in England must operate one of three decision making models:

  • an elected mayor and cabinet executive
  • a leader and cabinet executive
  • a committee system

Wyre Council currently operates under the leader and cabinet model.

Wyre Council is required to publish, in February each year, the number of signatures of local electors needed to support a valid petition requiring the council to hold a referendum on whether or not Wyre should change to one of the alternative models - either a directly elected Mayor or a committee system.

This number, known as the 'verification number', must be 5% of the local government electors listed in the published electoral register each year..
