More chances for young people to try sport in Wyre

We are delighted to announce Fleetwood Town Community Trust will continue to offer chances for young people to become more active as the TrySport programme has been extended.

The Trust has successfully won the contract to deliver the TrySport programme on behalf of Wyre Council for a further three year period, creating safe and inclusive spaces for children and young people to take part in sport, dance and activity sessions.

The TrySport sessions provides a breadth of sports and physical activities for young people to take part in across Wyre. The initiative aims to increase levels of physical activity whilst tackling health inequalities in the region. Sports in the scheme include, boxing, tag rugby, volleyball and basketball to name but a few.

Fleetwood Town Community Trust Chief Executive Officer, John Hartley explained:

“We are thrilled to be able to continue delivering the TrySport programme in Wyre, expanding on the existing offer providing a wider array of sports and activity opportunities.

“It’s imperative that we provide the platform for each child to develop and grow, incorporating a progressive pathway into sport and activity clubs linking with community grassroot groups.”

Priesley Duffy, the Trust’s TrySport Coordinator stated:

“I am very happy to continue this long standing partnership with the council. Working together we can make a difference in these young people’s lives. Trying to get involved in sports and new activities can really benefit in more ways than we think.

“It’s a safe space to relieve stress, it’s a fun opportunity to learn and it’s a great way to become more sociable. I love that we can assist the next generation in their development and that we can offer so many different sports and locations across the borough, making the programme accessible to all.”

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Borough Council added:

“Encouraging young people to get more active has so many benefits, from improved physical and mental health to improved behaviour in school, as well as a chance to meet new friends. Our partnership with Fleetwood Town Community Trust allows us to give more children the chance to take part in friendly sport sessions that they might not otherwise get the chance to try. If you want to encourage children in your family to get active I’d recommend taking a look at what’s on and just give something a try. They’ll receive a warm welcome and will enjoy taking part whatever their experience or ability.”
