England bike scores winner at Fleetwood Cycling Festival

Published on Tuesday 15th June 2010

Football's World Cup proved the inspiration for Matilda Poppet-Grundy who proudly showed off her England bike at this year's Fleetwood Cycling Festival.

The six year old from Preston Street, Fleetwood, was the winner of the Bling Your Bike competition which invited youngsters to dig deep into a craft box and get creative with their cycles.

Matilda picked up a goody bag full of prizes and mum, Emily said: "She decided to go with an England theme for the World Cup and used everything she could find to bling her bike, from scarves and flags to paint and garlands.

"We've brought the whole family along including the kids and the grandparents. We're all going to attempt the four mile guided bike ride. We've had a great day."

An estimated 500 people flocked to the free event at Marine Gardens, with 120 taking part in guided bike rides to Cleveleys and back.

Other attractions included BMX stunts, vintage bike displays and a circus big top.

Fleetwood Cycling Festival was organised by Wyre Borough Council in collaboration with Pennine Events Ltd of Barnoldswick and Lancashire County Council.

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Leisure and Culture Portfolio Holder, said: "It was great to see so many people, especially families, enjoying the festival, despite the change in weather.

"Hopefully many of these visitors will have caught the cycling bug and will now be making good use of the many routes we have in Wyre and beyond."
