To achieve our net-zero target, it is important to understand where we are now. This means determining the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are currently being produced from both council operations, and across Wyre.

Wyre area
In 2019, Wyre’s carbon footprint was 507,400 tonnes CO2e.
These emissions were produced from five main areas:
- Domestic (34%)
- Transport (30%)
- Industry (24%)
- Commercial (9%)
- Public sector (3%)
Overall, the largest individual source of emissions came from the gas used to heat homes across Wyre. You can help to reduce this by switching your energy supply to a renewable source.
Parish and town councils
The community carbon calculator shows the carbon footprint of all town and parish councils across the UK. This covers two types of carbon footprint, territorial and consumption:

The territorial footprint show all the emissions generated within an area. Communities with industrial estates, such as Fleetwood, or those located close to the M6 motorway therefore have a higher territorial footprint.

The consumption footprint shows the average emissions produced per household. This takes into account food and diet, travel, goods and services, waste, and housing. Communities with households heated by oil, such as Winmarleigh, Out Rawcliffe and Bleasdale, have a higher consumption footprint as this produces more emissions.

Council operations
Emissions from the council’s operations include all our buildings, vehicle fleet, staff business travel, leisure centres, public toilets, and waste collection. In the 2018/19 financial year, approximately 2,726.62 tonnes CO2e emissions were produced by the council’s operations. This dropped to 2,282.00 tonnes CO2e in the following 2019/20 financial year.
The main sources of our emissions were from:
- gas heating
- our vehicle fleet
- electricity use.

However, these emissions account for less than 1% of all emissions across Wyre. As a district council, we only have control over a small proportion of Wyre’s footprint. It is therefore crucial that we all do our bit to tackle the climate emergency together.
