Self-Isolation Payment

The Test and Trace Support Payment scheme is open for applications.    

Self-Isolation Payment

From 28 September 2020, you are entitled to make a claim for a Test and Trace Support Payment of £500 if you are on a low income, and: 

  • are told to stay at home and self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace, either because you have tested positive for coronavirus, or have recently been in close contact with someone who has tested positive; and
  • are employed or self-employed; and 
  • are unable to work from home and will lose income as a result; and 
  • you currently claim Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit, income-based Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit and/or Pension Credit.

If more than one person in your household has been told to isolate, then they can also make a separate claim for a support payment, providing that they are also employed or self-employed, in receipt of a qualifying benefit and unable to work from home. 

Discretionary Support Payment

You may still be able to claim a discretionary support payment of £500 even if you don’t claim one of the above benefits. You can make an application for a discretionary payment if you: 

  • are told to stay at home and self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace, either because you have tested positive for coronavirus, or have recently been in close contact with someone who has tested positive; and
  • are employed or self-employed; and 
  • work more than 10 hours per week
  • are unable to work from home; and
  • were already on a low income that has decreased further as a result of having to isolate*; and 
  • are responsible for payment of a mortgage or rent in respect of your home; and
  • are not a full-time student; and
  • have savings of less than £6,000; and
  • are responsible for payment of council tax, or live in a house in multiple occupation i.e. somewhere where you share use of a bathroom and/or kitchen

*Applications will only be considered if the applicants gross income per week has been equal to or less than:

  • single adult £300
  • couple £500
  • plus an additional £75 per child up to a maximum of 3 children.

Before starting your application for a NHS Test and Support payment please ensure you have the following information available:

  • your National Insurance number
  • your 8 – digit test and trace ID number
  • your most recent Bank Statements, proof of self-employment or wage slips

If you are making an application for a discretionary payment we may need further information from you.  Any information you are asked to supply will need to be provided before your application will be considered.  

In some cases further information may be requested in order to clarify your situation. If it is we will contact you.

Please be aware that:

  • isolation grants are taxable payments and we are required to provide HMRC with the details of everyone we make a payment to
  • if your application for a self-isolation payment is rejected as ineligible, there is no right of appeal against this decision

Please note that you cannot apply for a NHS Test and Trace payment if:

  • you have not been told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace
  • you do not have an 8-digit ID number provided by NHS Test and Trace
  • you are self-quarantining after returning from a trip abroad
  • 14 days have passed since the last day of your self- isolation 
  • you were told to isolate before 28 September 2020
