A statement from the Leader of Wyre Council, Councillor David Henderson regarding the reopening of YMCA leisure centresPublished Tuesday, 01 December 2020
“At November's Cabinet meeting we announced our intention to provide additional funding of £340,165 in 2020/21 to enable Fylde Coast YMCA to continue to provide a leisure service in Wyre.
“This is in addition to the previously agreed £636,345 of additional funding, bringing the total support package to just under £1million since June 2020. Without this, none of the YMCA centres in Wyre would be in a position to reopen.
“In November we put forward a recommendation that this money be used in a way that provides the highest chance of all the centres being able to reopen as soon as possible. Thornton and Garstang are the centres that we agreed with the YMCA should reopen first. These centres have retained the highest proportion of their members since reopening after the first lockdown and therefore provide the best chance of bringing in money to support the other centres that have not been as busy further down the line.
“We understand public concern that the centres at Poulton and Fleetwood are not reopening at the same time as Garstang and Thornton, however I want to stress that this situation is being reviewed monthly and it is our intention to continue to work with the YMCA to reopen all the centres as soon as it’s viable to do so.
“Our Cabinet report laid out our recommendations and our reasoning behind them. Today we have received a call-in request in relation to the cabinet decision on the report and as such it will be taken to the Overview and Scrutiny committee for review on 15 December. We will provide an update on the outcome of this meeting.”
