Wyre’s community response to CoronavirusPublished Monday, 23 March 2020
Wyre Council is putting together a community response network to help those affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.
The council is setting up area hubs covering Fleetwood, Thornton Cleveleys, Poulton, Garstang and Over Wyre. These will support those in the Government’s outlined high risk categories, those over 70 and others with underlying health issues who are self-isolating and don’t have the support of friends, neighbours or family. A helpline will be operational by the end of the week and further details of how the hubs will operate and who they will serve will be issued in the next few days.
The council is also asking community groups and organisations who are already doing a great job offering support to local people to get in touch, so that activity can be co-ordinated across the borough.
Councillor David Henderson, Leader of Wyre Council explains, "We are facing an unprecedented situation and want to make sure our communities are supported. We are humbled to see our communities already pulling together in response to the Coronavirus outbreak and we are working hard as a council to protect our residents, in particular those who are elderly, vulnerable or isolated.
“We recognise that there is already lots of fantastic community work underway so we are making links to co-ordinate activity where possible, putting people in touch with those offering the help they need.
“If you are running a community group or an organisation that is offering support to local people, or who would like to help out in some way to let us know what you are doing or would like to do. It could include help with shopping, making phone calls, sending post or addressing other essential needs.
“We know that well-meaning individuals are offering help locally, which is wonderful, but at the moment we are only collating information about support that is endorsed by a group/organisation who have records of their volunteer/staff details.”
Whether you are an existing or new community group or organisation offering local support you can register your help by filling out a form at https://bit.ly/WyreCommunitySupport
