Fleetwood parkrun turns one!

Fleetwood parkrunners Published Monday, 22 July 2019

Fleetwood promenade parkrun celebrates its first anniversary on Saturday 3 August and everyone is invited to come along and enjoy a walk, jog or run along the beautiful coastline route.

To mark the anniversary of the free weekly event, the Fleetwood parkrun team is asking people to bring along food donations for Fleetwood food bank to help support a local cause.

Event director Sue Ashton comments, “It’s been an amazing first year for the parkrun. We have welcomed over 100 participants on many weeks and just a couple of weeks ago we had 220 people come along! We have people from all walks of life taking part – people with disabilities, families, runners with buggies, runners with dogs and many club runners.

“We have received so many positive comments about our team of volunteers and how friendly the event is – and of course about the stunning views.

“We’re really looking forward to celebrating on our anniversary. Fancy dress of any theme is optional and we are supporting our local food bank in Fleetwood. If you have any spare foodstuff to hand, the bank will happily receive donations of breakfast cereals, tinned meat products, tinned fruit, tinned fish, soup, rice pudding, jam, pasta sauces and coffee. Please no baked beans or dried pasta at the moment though. Also, they will gratefully receive household items such as washing up liquid, shampoo, shower gel and toilet rolls. Please bring your items on the day and we will sort it from there.”

Since Fleetwood parkrun started a whopping 1,784 runners have run a total of 23,830km. Local people and visitors from all over the country have taken part totalling over 95 days of running between them and 1,035 personal bests have been achieved.

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Wyre Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement comments, “I’m delighted to see Wyre’s first parkrun become such a success. Fleetwood is the perfect location as the promenade is nice and flat making it suitable for everyone, and the views are amazing.

“Parkrun isn’t just for runners. We’ve seen people with all abilities enjoying the event and reaping the benefits of being outside and being active. I’d like to thank all the volunteers who work so hard each week to put on the event as without them it would not be possible.”

Setting off on the promenade outside Fleetwood YMCA at 9am every Saturday, Fleetwood’s parkrun is part of a worldwide series of 5k events. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing or how fast you go. What matters is taking part. If you’d like to take part you can walk, jog or run, or even take up a role as an event volunteer.

To take part you need to register with parkrun before an event as registration is not available at the run. Simply go to then just turn up with your barcode. Once registered you can take part in any parkrun as often as you want and you will never need to register again. Under 11s need to be accompanied by an adult and well behaved dogs on a short lead are welcome.
