Hillhouse International Enterprise Zone goes livePublished Friday, 01 April 2016
Hillhouse International Enterprise Zone (EZ) in Thornton Cleveleys was officially launched on 1 April 2016.
As an Enterprise Zone Hillhouse International boasts a unique opportunity to build on its chemical and advanced plastics industries, as well as targeting firms within the energy led and advanced manufacturing sectors. This is alongside attracting mixed use businesses that will drive investment and growth across Wyre and provide associated business opportunities. Businesses could receive benefits including business rate relief for five years or enhanced capital allowances.
The new Enterprise Zone, along with a sister Enterprise Zone at Blackpool Airport, will be overseen by the Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre Economic Development Company on behalf of the local authorities and Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Both sites will now provide further opportunities for local businesses to develop.
Councillor Peter Murphy, Cabinet member with responsibility for economic development at Wyre Council, said: "We have always encouraged and supported businesses to invest and grow in Wyre but Enterprise Zone status is a massive incentive for companies to invest in Wyre and could potentially create thousands of jobs.
It is great news for the borough and gives us a focus for attracting new businesses, reducing unemployment and driving forward further growth.
"Working alongside Blackpool Airport and BAE Enterprise Zones we now have the chance to make the Fylde Coast as a whole a really great place for businesses to relocate and expand."
Hillhouse is located on the site of the former ICI manufacturing plant and is home to over 40 businesses including Victrex, AGC Chemicals, Addison Project and Vinnolit.
Edwin Booth, Chair of Lancashire LEP said: “The LEP’s Enterprise Zone strategy is based on twin-track approach which looks to deliver jobs and opportunities locally while also creating a county-wide network of high capacity and integrated business hubs that work closely together. To help fulfil this vision, the LEP has worked hard with local partners and Government to secure EZ status for Blackpool Airport and Hillhouse and we now have four strong EZ sites, including Samlesbury and Warton, which combined form a significant investor offer to new occupiers within the context of the Northern Powerhouse.”
Hillhouse landowner NPL Group's Chairman, Robert McFarlane, said: "We are delighted with the news which is vindication for the hard work put in to the bidding process by the company and our partners Wyre Council and the LEP.
"This provides a tremendous boost to our comprehensive investment plans for employment, technology and energy development at the site which can now be accelerated and will show the strength of our ambition and commitment to this site, the wider area and the Northern Powerhouse".
The bid for Enterprise Zone status was supported by Wyre Council, Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, Lancashire County Council, NPL Estates and the Blackpool Fylde & Wyre Economic Development Company.
