
Our programme of spring activities and events for May are brought to you by our rangers, volunteers, community partners and local groups!
There are lots of activities and events to take part in this May, including walks all over Wyre, the famous Garstang walking festival, social and family cycling, Stanah Squirrels wildlife watch club, and open days at The Mount Pavilion and Bleasdale Tower Gardens. Be it countryside or coast, there's something for everyone!
Although many of the activities are free some will need to be booked in advance and some are charged. Wyre Council works in partnership with many organisations so you may be booking with any one of these organisations. The activity listing will provide contact details for the relevant organisation that you need to book with. If the event listing states to book through Visit Garstang, please call 01995 602125, email garstangtic@wyre.gov.uk or drop into the Visit Garstang Centre, Cherestanc Square, Garstang, PR3 1EF. Visit Garstang Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30am to 4:30pm.

Garstang Walking Festival 2022: 30 April to 8 May
With over 40 walks for all ages and abilities, the festival is the perfect chance to experience the countryside around Garstang, rural Wyre, the Forest of Bowland and the Fylde Plain.
Choose from a huge range of walks, including the three day Wyre Way Challenge, Nordic walking, easy access short walks, family activities, evening walks, wildlife strolls, heritage ambles, dog friendly trails and everything in between.

Special events and activities for May
Mount Pavilion Open Day Sunday 1 May
10am – 4pm The Mount Pavilion, Fleetwood. FREE
The Mount Pavilion will be open for the public to explore inside and learn about its heritage. Wheelchair and pushchair accessible. No need to book.
Rossall Point - A look at the natural, military and social history of the area Tuesday 3 May
1:30pm – 3pm. Fleetwood area. FREE
A look at the natural, military and social history of the area - the southern edge of Morecambe Bay.Graded as an easy walk which is 2.5 miles in distance. To book visit Fleetwood Museum reception or call on 01253 876621. Reception open 10:30am and 4pm, Monday to Saturday.
Saturday 7 May
Explore Wyre - Lapwings and Hares Tramper Trek
10am – 12:30pm. Claughton area £4
Join the countryside rangers to look for lapwings (and hopefully their chicks) and maybe a hare or two. Walkers welcome. Graded as a hard walk, 6 miles in distance. Suitable for Trampers. Contact Visit Garstang to book your place and Tramper.
Sow and Grow Your Own sweetcorn
1pm – 3pm The Pavilion, Memorial Park, Fleetwood. FREE.
Sow your own fruit and vegetables with the Gardening Club. Just drop-in 20 minute sessions. No need to book.
Wyre big beach clean up at Staynall Wednesday 11 May

Explore Wyre Walk - Cobble Hey Legstretcher Friday 13 May
10:30am – 12:30pm. Claughton area £4
A pleasant 2 hour circular walk f rom Cobble Hey Farm across farmland paths and tracks discovering some interesting bird life along the way. Refreshments available at end of walk at extra cost. Graded as a hard walk, 3-4 miles in distance. Contact Visit Garstang to book your place.
Stanah Squirrels Wildlife Watch Saturday 14 May
10am – 12/12:30pm. Thornton area £1
A monthly environmental/wildlife group for children aged 8 to 14! Nature walks, wildlife surveys, practical work and lots of fun. Parental consent forms required. For more information and to book please call 07989 579351
Wyre Rivers Trust Amble through Preesall Tuesday 17 May
11am – 1pm Preesall Playing Fields. FREE
Blow away the cobwebs on a pleasant walk around the fields and tracks of the countryside surrounding Preesall.Graded as a moderate walk, 3 miles in distance. No need to book.
Bleasdale Tower Gardens Open Weekend Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May
12 noon – 4:30pm both days. £5 adults, £1 children
Bleasdale Tower Gardens. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Bleasdale. Open weekend with stalls plus a heritage guided walk each day (additional £2 for the walk). All proceeds go to the local community. No need to book.
Public Rights of Way Conservation day Tuesday 24 May
10.30am - 2pm. Help our team to maintain public rights of way across the borough. FREE. Booking in advance required: email countrysideservice@wyre.gov.uk.
Sunday 29 May
Discover Wyre - Spring Bird Walk
10am – 11am Rossall Point Tower, Fleetwood. FREE
Visit Rossall Point Tower to enjoy coastal and sea birdwatching, looking out for summer bird visitors and signs of spring migration of birds. Graded easy. Binoculars useful, bring outdoor clothes and footwear. No need to book.
Public Rights of Way Conservation day
10.30am - 2pm. Help our team to maintain public rights of way across the borough. FREE.Booking in advance required: email countrysideservice@wyre.gov.uk.
Conservation day - dune monitoring Monday 30 May
10am - 2.30pm. Learn about dune wildlife and help us to monitor the dunes by recording plants, taking fixed point photos and recording changes. FREE. Booking in advance required: email countrysideservice@wyre.gov.uk.
Tuesday 31 May
Spring Fun Children's Arts Session
10am – 12 noon. Wyre Estuary Country Park, Thornton. FREE
Free and fun spring-themed session for children aged 7-11. An easy and accessible session which teaches creative skills in a beautiful setting. This is a drop-off activity and children should be brought to the reception area at the Riverside Room 15 mins before the start time to allow for registration. Pick up f rom reception area at 12 noon. Contact Visit Garstang to book your place.
Storytime on the Estuary
2pm – 3:30pm. Wyre Estuary Country Park, Thornton. FREE
Join us at the Wyre Estuary Country Park’s outdoor theatre to learn the story of the little Cucumber Fish of Wyre. Tramper, wheelchair and pushchair accessible. Booking essential via www.thebay.org.uk/events
Walking Wyre and Wellbeing walks
Our Wellbeing Walks offer the chance to take a safe and easy walk to help begin to improve your health and fitness levels. They vary from 30 minutes to 60 minutes duration. Wellbeing walks begin weekly from the same location. Similar in length and pace to Wellbeing Walks, our Walking Wyre walks may tackle slightly more challenging terrain, such as one or two stiles or short steep inclines.
