Council Tax Support

Backdating

Under normal circumstances we will only award council tax support from the date you apply. In certain circumstances however, we will consider backdating. Those circumstances include that at the time you should have claimed:

  • you were ill and there was nobody else to help you make a claim
  • you had just left prison, hospital or long term care
  • you were unable to manage your own affairs and there was nobody else to help you make a claim
  • you had just suffered a bereavement of a partner or close relative
  • you were wrongly advised that you could not claim council tax support by someone you should have been able to rely on, for example, an advice agency, the council, or the Department for Work and Pensions

Apply for backdating

We will write to you to let you know our decision once we have considered your application.

If you are not satisfied with our decision then you can appeal to the Valuation Tribunal for England.

The maximum a claim can be back dated for is six months if you are a working-age claimant and three months if you are of pension-age (over 65 years of age).
