The playground at Memorial Park in Fleetwood is set to be improved thanks to funding from the Lancashire Environment Fund, the Friends of Memorial Park and the council

New play equipment is being installed thanks to a grant of £29,500 from the Lancashire Environment Fund, a donation of £5212 from the Friends of Memorial Park and funding of £2788 from Wyre Council.

Wyre Council will lead on the project, which will see the existing climbing frame replaced, a new inclusive multi-unit added and the existing playground roundabout replaced with an inclusive roundabout suitable for all abilities.

This bespoke play equipment has been created to be dynamic, offer a high level of challenge and provides opportunities for sliding, climbing, swinging, rotating, balancing, traversing, spinning, twisting and most of all fun. The inclusive equipment has been designed with wheelchair users in mind so that everyone can join in.

Councillor Simon Bridge, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces at Wyre council comments, “It’s really exciting to receive this money from the Lancashire Environment Fund and I’d like to also thank the Friends of Memorial Park group who have worked so hard to raise the money which they have donated to this project.

“Together, we are committed to maximising opportunities for improving the health and wellbeing of our community and quality play equipment like will help families to get out and have fun in our great outdoors.

“Our parks used and loved by many, more so at the moment than ever. Please continue to use these spaces responsibly by giving each other space, picking up after your dog and putting your rubbish in the bin. We all need to do our bit to keep our parks and open spaces looking beautiful for us all to enjoy.”

In 2016 Memorial Park was awarded £2.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore the site for the community. The Friends of Memorial Park were pivotal in the success of the grant and continue to support the management of the site.

Work is starting on 8 March. The play area will be closed for approximately 4 weeks whilst the work is carried out.
