Ukraine Independence Day

The ukraine flag

Wyre Council will this week join people around the world in marking Ukraine’s Independence Day on Thursday 24 August, showing solidarity with the people of Ukraine

Councillor Michael Vincent, Leader of Wyre Council comments,

“Over the last 18 months we have supported almost 100 Ukrainians seeking refuge in the UK. Through the generosity of our residents opening up their homes and the Homes for Ukraine scheme, this has made a huge difference to the lives of those fleeing the conflict. We thank each and every person who has helped give such a warm welcome.

“Today and every day we stand by the people of Ukraine and will continue to fly the Ukraine flag at Wyre Council’s Civic Centre. We must never forget those still fighting the war in Ukraine and I’d encourage everyone to mark this day in the hope of peace.”

The people of Ukraine still need help. It’s not too late to become a host for those fleeing the war. You can register your interest at https://apply-to-offer-homes-for-ukraine.service.gov.uk/

You can also show your solidarity through the #SunflowersForUkraine campaign. The aim is create a unity wave of support on social media through posting pictures of sunflowers - the national flower of Ukraine. Share a painting, a photograph, an image of flowers you’ve grown at home or a field full of sunflowers to send a message of support using the hashtag #sunflowersforukraine
