Paul Deacon appointed as new Chairman of the Royal Marines Association Published Friday, 10 May 2019

The Board of RMA – The Royal Marines Charity, and the Commandant General Royal Marines have agreed to appoint Wyre Council Officer Paul Deacon as the new Chairman of the RMA Membership Committee.

Paul has accepted this important position within the leadership of the Corps Family and will take over from Ron Bell JP on 5 December 2019, allowing time for a considered hand-over of the broad range of responsibilities.

Paul was born in Portsmouth in 1963, the son of a Royal Marines Band Sergeant.  He joined the Corps in 1980 at the age of 16. He served in 42 Cdo RM during the Falklands conflict, Comacchio Group RM (then based at Arbroath) and finally with the RM Detachment at the NATO Headquarters at HMS WARRIOR in Northwood.  He left the Corps in 1988 and joined RMR Bristol.  He subsequently volunteered to re-join the Corps for Operation HAVEN (1991), serving in North Iraq and South Turkey with 40 Cdo RM.

Paul has been a Local Government Officer for 25 years, working for Wyre Council in Community Development, Community Safety and more recently, in Environmental Health and Licensing. Paul also supports the council’s Armed Forces Champion and is the council’s War Memorials Officer.

Paul joined the Royal Marines Association (RMA) at the age of 40 becoming the youngest member of a thriving Blackpool branch. He has helped organise a number of annual fundraising events for Royal Marines charities, also training as a TRiM practitioner.  He was quickly elected as Vice Chairman and subsequently Chairman of the branch.  In 2014, he was elected as the Northern Region representative to the Board of Trustees and became Chairman of the Northern Region shortly afterwards.

In the last couple of years, Paul has been one of three trustee representatives for the RMA on the Merger Steering Group, which has successfully guided the RMA and TRMC to merge into the new RMA – The Royal Marines Charity.

The Commandant General Royal Marines, Major-General Charlie Stickland OBE, stated RMA Chairman is a significant appointment within the Corps Family. I congratulate Paul on his selection, wish him all good fortune in the future, and thank him for stepping up to such a significant position to take the Corps Family forwards”.

Garry Payne Chief Executive of Wyre Council said, “We are delighted that a valued member of the Wyre Council team has been selected for such a prestigious position with The Royal Marines Charity and will support him in his determination to make the most of this opportunity”.
