Help make a difference to Wyre’s coastline this yearPublished Tuesday, 15 January 2019
There are two new regular beach cleans starting in Wyre this year, giving you more opportunities to work with Wyre Council and LOVE my BEACH to keep local beaches and bathing waters clean.
Fleetwood Beach Care starts this Saturday 19 January at 10.30am – noon, meeting at the lower lighthouse and then Marine beach at 1pm – 2.30pm.
Then the brand new Larkholme Grasslands beach care group kicks off on Sunday 27 January at 10.30am – 12.30pm meeting at Larkholme Parade.
Volunteering for something like a group beach clean is a great way to improve your health and wellbeing - as well as getting out in the fresh air, giving something back to your community can keep you active. It’s a free way to get some exercise complete with beautiful views. With the average event lasting up to 2 hours, there’s plenty of time to make a dent in your 10,000 daily steps!
You don’t have to live by the sea to make a difference – wherever you live, work or visit in the North West, you can help. If you’ve never been to a beach clean before, don’t fret. Equipment (pickers, gloves, bags) are always provided so all you need to do is dress for the weather and wear some sturdy shoes. It’s also the perfect opportunity to meet new people, great if you’ve just moved to the area or you’re just looking to make some new, like-minded friends.
Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council comments, “Our beach clean groups have been set up to help tackle a global problem of littering on the coastline. We want to work with LOVE my BEACH and the local community to keep our beaches clean and looking beautiful. Not only that, but they’re a fun and rewarding activity for the whole family to take part in! If you’re trying to spend more time outdoors and give something back to your community the beach cleans are a great thing to get involved in.”
As well as the two new groups, there are lots of existing beach cleans that take place in Wyre including ones at Rossall Point Tower, Cleveleys, Knott End, Rossall beach, Harbour Village and Over Wyre.
Each beach clean is run or supported by Wyre Council and LOVE my BEACH. The LOVE my BEACH campaign was created in 2013 by Keep Britain Tidy and is a partnership of organisations working together in North West England to improve the quality of bathing waters.
All the beach cleans in Wyre take place monthly.
