Fleetwood recycling centre to close for improvementsPublished Wednesday, 12 December 2018
Fleetwood Recycling Centre is to be closed for a number of weeks for improvements to the site to be carried out.
The facility on Jameson Road will be closed from Friday 18 January 2019, and is expected to reopen in early March 2019.
People can use Blackpool Recycling Centre at Bispham as long as they are not in a van or a car towing a trailer whilst Fleetwood is closed. However, anyone who needs a permit for their vehicle or who wishes to dispose of inert waste , such as soil, rubble, ceramics such as toilets and sinks, and plasterboard will have to use a Lancashire County Council site, the nearest being at Lytham and Preston. Permits can be obtained free of charge by calling 0300 123 6781 or go to www.lancashire.gov.uk/waste.
County Councillor Albert Atkinson, deputy leader of Lancashire County Council with responsibility for waste, said: "Our Fleetwood Household Waste Recycling Centre has always suffered from problems with the drainage, with water pooling on the site during and after heavy rainfall, which is why we're carrying out this work to resolve it.
"The county council began directly managing the recycling centres in April this year, and we're taking the opportunity to sort out this issue to improve the quality of service for visitors and the staff who work there.
"Closing a facility such as this is never ideal, but we're doing it at the quietest time of year when the site sees the least traffic, with our intention being to have it reopen again in early March ready for the start of the busiest period over the spring and summer.
"We're sorry for the inconvenience while people will have to travel to their nearest alternative site, however hope they will understand that our investment will make Fleetwood recycling centre easier to use in future."
In Wyre, people can use their doorstep recycling facilities to recycle paper, card, glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, clean foil, aerosols, and plastic bottles. Textiles can also be placed in a tied plastic bag left next to the green box on recycling day. Small electrical items that would fit in the green box can also be left in a carrier bag next to the green box on recycling day. Other household waste can be disposed of in the grey bin. Large items can also be collected by Wyre Council for a charge – call 01253 891000 or go to www.wyre.gov.uk/waste to arrange a bulky waste collection.
