See the sails turn at Marsh Mill this Easter weekend

Marsh Mill Published Tuesday, 11 April 2017

Marsh Mill in Thornton will reopen for the spring season this weekend with a free event to mark the celebration.

After a long winter, Marsh Mill will reopen on Saturday 15 April for a weekend long celebration with a huge range of activities for the whole family. Special guests the Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Terry Lees and Thornton Gala Queen will join the event and cut the ribbon to formally open the mill to the public.

Families can join the celebration over the Easter weekend and take part in free activities such as creating your own windmills, colouring and making masks.

The Friends of Marsh Mill will also provide tours of the 223 year old Grade II listed mill, along with a lively performance from the Windmill Players and musical tribute from LiquidAmbar to celebrate the incredible history of the mill.

Visitors will also be able to admire the extensive repairs that were carried out after a £320,000 investment from Wyre Council, including a new set of sails which will be turning throughout the event on both days.

Michael Brightman, Chairman of the Friends of Marsh Mill, said: “The Friends of Marsh Mill are looking forward to working in collaboration with Wyre Council and volunteers for another year.

“We’ve been awarded a small Heritage Lottery Fund grant to carry out projects to help us become more informed, better trained and to keep the sails turning. We will be asking visitors to the mill for their views on what they liked about their visit and suggestions for improvements.

“We like to think of Marsh Mill as a northern powerhouse since 1794. We hope the projects we’re undertaking and public responses we receive will help us keep the mill open well into the future.”

Marsh Mill will also be hosting a range of events throughout 2017, including National Mills weekend on 13 and 14 May, Thornton Gala on 11 June, Heritage Open Days on 9 and 10 September, Marsh Mill's 223rd Birthday on 21 and 22 October and the Christmas lights switch on 26 November.

Marsh Mill is located at Marsh Mill Shopping Village on Fleetwood Road North in Thornton Cleveleys. The event will take place on Saturday 15 April and Sunday 16 April and open from 10:30am until 4:30pm.
