Call for voters in Wyre to register in time for elections this May

Elections Published Tuesday, 21 March 2017

With local elections taking place in just a few weeks, voters in Wyre are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote and able to take part on polling day, Thursday 4 May.

Voters will go to the polls to elect their representatives to shape and decide on Lancashire County Council services which affect everyone living in the twelve district areas of Lancashire, including Wyre. A by-election is also being held in Bourne ward, Thornton, following the resignation of Natalie Reeves.

Wyre Council is reminding voters in the borough that they need to register by the deadline of Thursday 13 April otherwise they won’t be able to take part in the elections.

Garry Payne, Electoral Registration Officer for Wyre Council, said: “Time is running out to make sure you can take part in elections this May, so I’d encourage everyone in Wyre to take action now if they’re not already registered to vote. It’s quick and easy to register, but after the deadline of 13 April, it will be too late.”

There are 84 county councillors elected by the people to cover the electoral divisions in the twelve district areas across Lancashire. Eight county councillors cover the Wyre area. Lancashire County Council provides a range of services including education, fostering and adoption, health and social care, cultural services, libraries and archives, registering births, deaths and marriages, recycling and highways and transportation.

Emma Hartley, Head of Campaigns at the Electoral Commission said: “Our research shows that young people, students and recent home movers are particularly less likely to be registered to vote. So if you have moved house recently, then make sure you’re registered correctly. If you’re not registered, you won’t be able to have your say on issues that directly affect your day-to-day life in Wyre.”

To register to vote, visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote before Thursday 13 April. Anyone who is already registered to vote does not need to re-register. If you’re not sure if you’re registered to vote call Wyre Council on 01253 887257 to check.
