Wyre Council has provided funding for five primary schools in the borough to receive an award-winning Ofsted recognised, career-led programme.
The Raising Aspirations programme has been developed by Positive Footprints, and is already being delivered to primary schools in the area. It aims to raise aspirations, build resilience and open up the world of work for children and young people. Funding provided by Wyre Council will bring the programme to Garstang Community Primary, Great Arley School, Northfold Community Primary, Thornton Primary and St Hilda’s C of E Primary.
As part of the programme, pupils attend a careers carousel event, where they meet businesses from a wide range of sectors and learn about different types of jobs. Local and national companies take part to inspire the young people involved.
Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council said, “We’re delighted to support this programme and give children the chance to learn about all sorts of opportunities in the world of work that they might not have thought about. As well as providing funding, we have attended a number of career carousel events. Our Chief Executive Garry Payne and some of our officers have visited schools and chatted to children about different roles at the council and their own career paths.”
The Raising Aspirations programme is also currently delivered in Flakefleet Primary School amongst others in Wyre, funded by housing association Regenda Homes and Builders Supplies West Coast.
Dave McPartlin, Headteacher at Flakefleet Primary School, said: “Positive Footprints has had a big impact at our school. The children have really enjoyed getting involved and it's a perfect fit with our ambition to show that anything is possible when you dare to dream. The programme gives children an idea of the job roles that we have in our community and gives them the opportunity to look towards the future with confidence. They start to discover and reflect on their own skills and qualities which might make them suitable for certain types of employment. They have gained real insights into the qualifications that they will need.”
